“Listen To Me”

“Listen to me: If I set you free

From custody today, promise me

You’ll never drink and drive again;

And also obstain from alcohol during

Your year of probation?” I promised,

And never drank again since 1986.

/

That ended a ten year bout with the bottle

Full throttle, during which I was sober a year

Followed by two six month stretches clear.

AA was the only place to go to treat your self

If you had no health insurance or wealth;

And I jumped in like a drowning man grabs a rope.

/

Listen to me when I tell you alcohol is the worst

Drug our society has to offer, and is the first

Offered to children or teenagers cursed

To be a second or third generation lost to

The bottle. I went to two or three meetings

A day including a marathon meetings spree

/

On holidays. After a dozen years of listening

I felt the need to speak out against the boring

Endless talk of drinking days and orthodoxy

About the worshipping of the Big Book brings.

I was booed and made an outcast until a few

Understood my message that was brand new!

/

Every religion must have it’s few heretics

To make sure there is a voice against fanatics.
