Mother’s in a Nursing Home

Mother at 93 you’ve finally made it to

The Nursing Home this very week

With some dimensia and some weakness

But otherwise healthy for your age.

/

My oldest sister of four has been her

Caretaker for the recent years she’s

Been in assisted living, yet her first night

In this new home she said “Mean Mom” came out.

/

However she is no longer in a position

To “bark at the hand that feeds.”

Now I’ve become very good at guessing

What she is trying to say by finishing

/

Her sentences and she recognizes

Right away when I name the names,

Places or events she is trying to say.

/

I’m going to miss her despite her

Terrible neurotic personality because

Mother took care of me when I got sick

And I will never forget that.

/

I went from her house to a nursing home

for several weeks, until I finally made it

Back to Los Angeles from Phoenix in a

Great escape and stayed with friends.

/

Then at age 30 my father suddenly died

At age 60 at the 18th Hole at Pebble Beach

And left us nothing seeking revenge from

The grave leaving all to his mistress of decades.

/

It has always been assumed that Mother

Was neurotic due to an unhappy marriage.

I would like a few more years by telephone

As I can’t travel to see her in person.

/

The last 20 years she’s been a good grandmother

And she has three great grandchildren

To stay alive for who are still children.

Mother, I will miss you when you’re gone!
